“In a historic thaw of a relationship chilled since the early days of the Cold War, the United States announced plans Wednesday to restore diplomatic and economic ties with the communist island of Cuba. The changes came with the abrupt release of an American government contractor, Alan Gross, who had been imprisoned in Cuba for five years. WASHINGTON, D.C.President Barack Obama’s announcement on Wednesday that the United States would restore diplomatic relations with Cuba after more than 50 years of hostility drew the ire of two prominent Cuban-American members of New Jersey’s Congressional delegation. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and U.S. Rep. Albio Sires (D-8) expressed relief that Alan Gross, a U.S. government subcontractor for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) who was arrested in 2009 and accused of being a U.S. spy after allegedly supplying satellite photos and computer equipment to members of Cuba’s Jewish community, was released on Wednesday. Gross’ release was the opening move of a major policy shift that will lead to the restoration of regular diplomatic rules with Cuba, suspended in 1961, and the opening of an American embassy on the communist-ruled island. Sires, who was born in Cuba, added “Nothing the Cuban regime does is humanitarian in nature, particularly when it continues to deny the Cuban people basic human rights while utilizing fear, incarceration, and unwarranted force to maintain control,” said Sires in a written statement on Wednesday. “While I am relieved that Mr. Gross will finally be home with his family, I would be remiss not to wonder how the family of murdered New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster feels as his killer, Joanne Chesimard, still roams freely in Cuba. Chesimard [a.k.a. Assata Shakur] is currently listed by the FBI as the number one most wanted terrorist and has been enjoying political asylum in Cuba for 30 years. “It is a dangerous precedent to concede and utilize Americans detained abroad as mere pawns for trading,” Sires added. “Not only will this be an open invitation for rogue regimes and actors to follow the same playbook, but it potentially places many American lives overseas at risk.” http://www.allblackmedia.com

Spanish/Nat The Dominican Republic and Cuba have resumed diplomatic relations after 40 years. Both governments have re-opened consulates and the Dominican government hopes this new rapprochement will benefit the region. However, the Dominican Republic is facing harsh criticism from the United States which opposes the Caribbean nation becoming Cuba's main ally in the region. It's been 40 years since Cuba and the Dominican Republic cut their diplomatic ties. However, relations between the two Caribbean neighbours have thawed and both countries have announced a resumption of diplomatic relations. The first step has been to re-open consulates in Havana and Santo Domingo. In January, Dominican officials met Cuban officials to discuss a series of accords ranging from trade to cultural exchanges. In mid-April, Dominican officials met Cuban leader Fidel Castro during the official inauguration of the Dominican consulate in Havana. The Dominican Republic broke diplomatic relations with Cuba in 1958 during the government of dictator General Rafael Trujillo - an anti-Communist. Forty years later, the new democratic government hopes the new rapprochement will benefit their country and the Caribbean region. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "We understand that it allows us to give more coherence to the region. It allows Dominicans to be in a position to have cordial relations with all our neighbours, which will benefit the country in terms of trade...and simply to be a good neighbour. We also believe that we also help and cooperate in the strengthening of democracy and relations between nations." SUPER CAPTION: Eduardo Latorre, Dominican Foreign Minister The new friendship between Cuba and the Dominican Republic has been harshly criticised by the U-S which claims the Dominicans look set to become Cuba's main allies in the region. Dominicans for their part are criticising U-S policy towards Cuba. On Tuesday, dozens of protesters marched to the U-S embassy in Santo Domingo. They commemorated the 33rd anniversary of the U-S invasion of the Dominican Republic which prohibited leftist president Juan Bosch from returning to power after a military coup. The protesters - mostly from the local Communist Party - took the opportunity to demand an end to the U-S embargo against Cuba and to support their government's decision to resume diplomatic relations with the communist island. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The U-S reaction to the step taken by the Dominican government is sick. It is a sovereign right...it is the proper right of countries to establish relations with any country of the world. This insolent attitude reflects American preponderance and it's a sick reaction.. in this specific case their attitude towards revolutionary Cuba." SUPER CAPTION: Narciso Isa Conde, President Dominican Communist Party President Leonel Fernandez has invited Cuban leader Fidel Castro to attend a meeting of the Caribbean trade bloc known as CARICOM in August. The Obama administration's decision to resurrect diplomatic ties with Cuba after more than fifty years is a step in the right direction, but Washington and Havana have different political objectives that may hinder the normalization process. Meanwhile, the U.S. Congress is unlikely to lift the trade embargo anytime soon. CFR Adjunct Senior Fellow Carla Anne Robbins offers three things to know about the way forward for U.S.-Cuba ties. Conflicting Goals: President Obama hopes to use the detente to bring Cuba into the twenty-first century and move it toward democracy. Whereas the Cubans objective is to gain the maximum financial gain while maintaining "as much of the Old Castro system as they can," says Robbins. Tactical Focus: Immediate goals for U.S. and Cuban diplomats will be limited to resolving smaller issues. Washington wants to increase its diplomatic presence in Cuba. Havana wants Cuba removed from the State Department's list of State Sponsors of Terrorism, and demands the United States stop offering internet access and classes to dissidents. No Trade Boom: "There will be no trade bonanza for Americans," Robbins warns. Lifting the embargo requires congressional action, and this will not happen in the near term, she says. However, the cooling off period will make it easier for Americans to travel Cuba and spend their tourist dollars. http://www.cfr.org/cuba/us-cuba-relations/p36063

No one knows exactly what happened to the growing number of Americans and Canadians who have returned from diplomatic missions in Cuba. Many have returned with mysterious and disturbing symptoms. Some can no longer remember words. Others have hearing loss, speech problems, balance issues, nervous system damage, headaches, ringing in the ears, and nausea. In some there are signs of brain swelling or concussions indicating mild traumatic brain injuries. Some of the victims remember strange occurrences before the symptoms appeared. According to the Associated Press, one diplomat reported a "blaring, grinding noise" that woke him from his bed in a Havana hotel. The AP reports that some of the affected heard and felt nothing. Others heard similar grinding noises or a "loud ringing or a high-pitch chirping similar to crickets or cicadas," always in short bursts at night. Some have surmised that an acoustic or sonic weapon was used against the diplomats. A number of experts, however aren't sure whether such a device exists. http://www.businessinsider.com/sonic-weapons-used-diplomats-cuba-brain-damage-2017-9 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
